The fastest way to fix the "Out of Memory" error on LG Smart TV: This error is usually caused by an overloaded web browser cache. Open the built-in Web Browser, go to Settings (the three lines or dots icon), and select "Clear Browsing Data". Confirm by pressing OK.
LG TVs run on the webOS operating system. Despite having great picture and sound quality, most models come with very limited internal storage—often just 1.5 to 4 GB. Half of that is already taken up by the system itself.
If your online movie stops playing with an "Out of Memory" message, or if you can't install a new app, follow these steps to fix the issue.
1. Delete Unused Apps
The most obvious way to free up space is to delete streaming services and games you no longer use.
- Press the Home button on your Magic Remote.
- Scroll to the far right of the app ribbon and find the Edit Mode icon (a pencil).
- Hover your cursor over the app you want to delete.
- A small "X" or trash can icon will appear above the app. Click it and confirm the deletion.
Some pre-installed system apps (like LG Content Store) cannot be deleted. Focus on removing third-party apps you downloaded yourself.
2. Clear the TV Cache (Hard Power Cycle)
LG TVs accumulate temporary files (cache) from all running applications. Since webOS doesn't have a simple "Clear All Cache" button, you have to perform a hard reboot.
- Do not turn off the TV with the remote—simply unplug it directly from the wall outlet.
- Wait for exactly 60 seconds.
- Plug the TV back in and turn it on. During this cold boot, the operating system will automatically dump temporary files, freeing up precious megabytes.
3. Use a USB Flash Drive to Expand Storage
If you desperately need more space to install widgets and apps, you can expand your TV's storage using a standard USB flash drive.
- Take an empty USB drive (8 GB to 32 GB is ideal).
- Plug it into the USB port on the back of your LG TV.
- The system may prompt you to format the drive to be used as internal storage.
- Agree to format it. Now, new apps can be installed directly onto the USB drive.
4. Factory Reset (Last Resort)
If nothing else works, and your TV continues to lag and display memory errors, a full factory reset is the only solution.
Go to Settings (gear icon) → All Settings → General → Reset to Initial Settings. Note: This will wipe all your installed apps, accounts, and channel settings. The TV will return to its out-of-the-box state.
